PROGRAM 1: CINE CACHINERO
1922 (2023, Ecuador, 30') & Por un cine cachinero (2024, Ecuador, 10')

In this program I've combined two films made with archival materials. The first film tries to respond to the question of what to do when there is no archival image for a historical event, the second film is a video essay-manifesto about experimental filmmaking in Guayaquil. Both are films about work, about workers striking and massacred in the streets of Guayaquil one hundred years ago and about filmworkers today, looking for their raw material on those very streets. They share a common objective: to shed light on people and practices that have been ignored from Ecuador's history books -History and film history books alike.

Program followed by discussion. Total program time: 1 hour.

1922
Found footage/essay film, 30:00, 2023, ECUADOR

What to do when a film archive for an important historical moment does not exist? The film takes the case of the worker's strike and massacre of November 15th, 1922 for which there is no known archival moving image. Turning to another film from 1922 preserved by the country's National Film Archive, Fiestas del Centenario, as well as other international films made that year, I've tried to imagine what an audiovisual archive of that historical moment might look like. This leads me to questions of what was cinema in 1922 and in what ways cinema can collaborate with class struggle in the future... Inspired by Hito Steyerl's essay "In Defense of the Poor Image", this found footage essay film reclaims the "poor image" in the context of past and present class struggle in Ecuador.

ARTICLES:

EMAMI Art Experimental Film Festival - Mehdi Jahan (8 September 2025)

"Libertad Gills' question --"Where are they?" (also the title of her curated section) insists on the pursuit of images, particularly ones of state repression, that do not exist or that exist only in the interstices, like ghosts demanding projection. The act of reconstruction through her invocation of cinematic memory is never nostalgic; it is insurgent. In the face of erasure, it fosters solidarity between the fugitive 'images' of resistance from the past with today's precarious audiovisual documentation of protests which risk being drowned in the glut of images, transforming cinema into a relay between eras and between struggles, scraping against the false plenitudes of archives until the gaps speak."

Por un cine cachinero
Video essay-manifesto, 10', 2024, ECUADOR

The video essay "Por un cine cachinero", based on the manifesto of the same title published in the book Guayaquil en ruinas (Guayaquil in Ruins, Guayaquil Analógico, 2023), brings together films made in Guayaquil on analog film or made by reappropriating archives. The aim is to recontextualize these works within the local framework of “cachinería,” the name of popular second-hand markets. What would a film theory inspired by the cachinería look like? This video essay considers reappropriation in experimental cinema in Guayaquil as a practice that resignifies international found footage tendencies or fashions as well as local DIY traditions of reemployment and recycling. In a crisis of rising living costs, cachinería becomes a survival strategy for experimental filmmakers.

"A beautiful, lively, brilliantly curated celebration of Ecuadorian DIY filmmaking" - Letterboxd.

"As Libertad Gills shows in her audiovisual essay “Por un cine cachinero", experimental filmmaking in Ecuador often rests on the local economies of second-hand street markets known as cachinerías. The lack of structural support for production and preservation in Guayaquil has led many artists to adopt DIY approaches to filmmaking, based on appropriating discarded film materials and obsolete cameras and projectors. Building on a project that sought to rediscover Guayaquil’s decaying analog past, Gills recontextualizes cachinero films into a videographic manifesto that calls for embracing scarcity and second-hand appropriation as creative strategies for articulating — and ultimately overcoming — the impoverished character of local culture and the desolation of urban space. In a way, Gills’s work can also be understood as a locally specific and circumstantially more urgent return to what drove found-footage filmmaking in the first place — after all, one of the defining books on the history of this “genre” was titled SecondHand Cinema (Kino aus zweiter Hand)." - Byron Davies and Jiri Anger, "Toward a Geographically Specific Understanding of Filmic and Media Matter: An Introduction to a Special Issue", Iluminace Volume 37, 2025, p.12.
